Overview
Interventional radiology (IR) uses imaging — ultrasound, CT or fluoroscopy — to perform biopsies and treatments through tiny needles or catheters, avoiding open surgery. In oncology, IR is used for image-guided biopsy, tumour ablation, embolisation of liver tumours, and placement of central venous access.

Is interventional radiology an alternative to surgery?+
For some liver, kidney and lung tumours, image-guided ablation gives outcomes comparable to surgery with a much shorter recovery. Each case is decided in a tumour board.
Do I need a port for chemotherapy?+
A chemo-port makes long infusions safer and more comfortable, especially with regimens over several months. We advise on this before starting treatment.
