Immunotherapy in Raipur

Immunotherapy works differently from chemotherapy. Instead of attacking the tumour directly, it removes the brakes that cancer places on the immune system, allowing the body's own T cells to recognise and destroy cancer cells.

It is a genuine advance, but it is not for everyone. Eligibility depends on the cancer type, the stage, and specific test results such as PD-L1 expression or mismatch repair status. Dr. Ravi Jaiswal assesses suitability before recommending it.

Cancers where immunotherapy may be used

  • Non-small cell lung cancer, based on PD-L1 testing
  • Kidney and bladder cancer
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Certain lymphomas
  • Triple-negative breast cancer in selected situations
  • Tumours with high microsatellite instability or mismatch repair deficiency

Testing that decides eligibility

Immunotherapy is prescribed on evidence, not on hope. Depending on the cancer, tissue is tested for PD-L1 expression, MSI or MMR status, or tumour mutational burden. When these tests do not support immunotherapy, that is said plainly and an alternative plan is offered.

Targeted therapy — the related approach

Targeted therapy blocks a specific driver mutation inside the tumour. Lung cancers with EGFR, ALK or ROS1 changes, HER2-positive breast and stomach cancers, and several other tumours have effective targeted options, many of them oral tablets taken at home with periodic review.

What treatment involves

Immunotherapy is usually a short intravenous infusion every two to six weeks. Most patients tolerate it well, but because it activates the immune system it can cause inflammation in the thyroid, skin, bowel, liver or lungs. These immune-related effects are monitored with regular blood tests and are treatable when picked up early — which is why supervision by an oncologist matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is immunotherapy?

Yes, immunotherapy can be administered in Raipur for patients whose testing and clinical situation support it.

What are the side effects of immunotherapy?

Fatigue, rash, thyroid changes and, less commonly, inflammation of the bowel, liver or lungs. Regular monitoring allows most of these to be treated early.
